Bad Weave

Here is an example of what not to do!

bad weave

When I look back at this picture, I have to really laugh. But the truth is that at the time it was no laughing matter. It was a lot of hard work. At least 6- 8 hours of horizontal weaving. I was having a real hard time that day with my steamer. I was not getting a clean burning flame and it was not producing enough steam to bend the wicker. On top of that problem the fire was causing carbon monoxide in the garage. Well carbon monoxide is lighter than air and rises. Being a fireman, registered nurse and paramedic I was careful to open the garage door often for venting but obviously it was not enough. ( Of all people, I should have known better, but guess what, I didn't.) After 6 hours in the garage I started to get sick. I felt like hell for the next 3 days. 24 hours of diarrhea. That's enough, I won't go there.

The above custom weave was my very first attempt at weaving. My brother Guy (who is an expert at this, but lives in Texas) told me to go to the library and get a book on weaving small baskets. I did and it was one of the better things that I did. The book helped out so much.

When my wife (Lynn) came home from work and saw my work. She took a double take. She looked at my basket and then looked next to it at the basket my brother Guy had built and said, "Ted maybe you ought to put that in your van and drive to Texas and get some help from your brother".

Once I felt better, I took out the hack saw and cut all the horizontal weave out. It was so hard to see all this work go in the garbage, but I was very proud of my second attempt. Look to the next photo.

Did you know that all of our balloon rides are "private"?

We will not put other passengers in your balloon like other balloon operators.
